Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sep. 19, 2018) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, announced today official affiliation with Southern California Youth Ultimate (SCYU), making the league the most recent addition to USA Ultimate’s Affiliate Program.
Southern California Youth Ultimate strives to foster local, national and international amateur sports competition through the organization of activities that promote growth of the sport of ultimate including, but not limited to, educational programs, tournaments, leagues, fundraising, exhibition events and social events.
“SCYU is excited to continue to grow as an organization and to expand our reach through all of Southern California. Now that we have the backing of USA Ultimate, we believe the possibilities for SCYU are endless, and we look forward to our partnership,” said SCYU President Don Macatangay.
USA Ultimate’s League Affiliate Program is a significant step in the organization’s commitment to helping grow youth, college and league ultimate. The program helps strengthen and grow the sport across the country by building a national infrastructure of local disc organizations that unites and supports the sport and helps improve operational growth, efficiency and impact within each local community.
Grand Boyd, executive director of SCYU, said “We couldn’t be more excited to join the USA Ultimate family. Their principle values of Character, Community, and Competition fall right in line with our motto of Learn. Laugh. Play. For the past three years, SCYU has been working closely with L.A.’s largest after-school program – LA’s Best, part of Beyond the Bell – teaching the sport to over 4,000 elementary school students in the summer. While 90 percent of the children are under-resourced, we are confident that joining forces with USA Ultimate will catapult our efforts to create affordable playing opportunities for as many students as possible.”
Among the benefits offered to USA Ultimate-affiliated leagues are various materials and programs that assist with education, instruction and training initiatives, as well as several streams of financial support. USA Ultimate also assists its affiliated leagues with the facilitation of community recreation programs, youth camps, college program outreach and more.
Financial resources are available to USA Ultimate-affiliated leagues in the form of grants, discounts and rebate dollars, while leagues can also benefit from an insurance program covering events, players, directors and officers.
USA Ultimate maintains a close programmatic and strategic relationship with its affiliates, but each organization remains a separate and distinct entity that exists to serve its constituents, elects a board of directors and manages affairs under its own set of bylaws.
SCYU is the 24th member of the Affiliate Program. As part of the new partnership, SCYU will receive additional resources and support from USA Ultimate designed to assist with the expansion and promotion of grassroots programs and serve local players.
