Colorado Springs, Colo. (Jan. 16, 2020) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, announced today a three-year agreement that keeps the Beach Championships in Virginia Beach through 2022.

“Virginia Beach has provided a great experience for our athletes for the past several years, helping us to establish a cornerstone event for our beach division,” commented Will Deaver, managing director of competition and national team programs at USA Ultimate. “We look forward to working with our great local partners over the next three years to build off that success, where we will continue to blend top competition with a really fun destination. We appreciate the opportunity that a long-term partnership provides to support and grow both this event specifically and beach ultimate as a whole.”

The 2020 Beach Championships will return to their perennial home in Virginia Beach this spring. The event will be held in Virginia Beach for the sixth consecutive year and be contested May 9-10, 2020. Once again, the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and Resort Management, LLC, will serve as the local organizing committee for the Beach Championships.

“The City of Virginia Beach and our partners in the hospitality community are excited to welcome back the athletes, coaches, fans and friends of USA Ultimate,” said Nancy Helman, director of sports marketing for the Virginia Beach CVB. “Our beautiful Virginia Beach Oceanfront will be transformed, once again, into the ‘ultimate’ athletic facility, ensuring quality playing surfaces, championship atmosphere and authentic restaurants, fun attractions and unique shopping spots to visit when the games end. We can’t wait to see you this spring.”

George Alcaraz of Resort Management, LLC, is equally excited to bring the Beach Championships back to Virginia Beach.

“Resort Management is thrilled to support this USA Ultimate event in our beautiful resort area of Virginia Beach for the next three years. Resort Management, along with our local oceanfront Surfrider Foundation team, are looking forward to hosting this exciting sport in Virginia Beach. The annual event for the past five years of hosting USA Ultimate in Virginia Beach has been a great kickoff for our resort city.”

During the initial phase, applications will be accepted for teams in eight divisions: men’s, mixed, women’s, masters men’s, masters mixed, masters women’s, grand masters men’s and great grand masters men’s. Divisions with interest from at least six teams at the close of phase one applications will be contested at the 2020 Beach Championships.

In 2019, 64 teams competed in six divisions – men’s, mixed, women’s, masters mixed, grand masters men’s and great grand masters men’s.

The registration deadline for phase one applications for this year’s event is February 7, 5pm MST. Application and competition information can be found in the 2020 beach competition guidelines.

Beyond 2020, future editions are scheduled for May 8-9, 2021; and May 14-15, 2022.
