Colorado Springs, Colo. (December 11, 2020)—USA Ultimate (USAU), in partnership with the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), is excited to announce the final results of the inaugural Ultimate Disc Golf Derby. More than 100 competitors, including a mix of ultimate players and disc golfers, participated in six individual and three team divisions across five event locations.

The first event of its kind was announced earlier this fall as an opportunity to provide an alternative disc activity, combine skills across the sports of ultimate and disc golf and bring the two disc communities closer together. The premise was simple  play disc golf using USA Ultimate-approved discs.

The Derby consisted of multiple events run throughout the country during November and early December. Each competitor earned a Round Rating for each round they played, and the participants and teams with the best round ratings, across all of the events, earned final placement in the overall Derby competition. Participants and top performers earned some great prizes, including ultimate discs courtesy of Discraft, jerseys from the VII Apparel Co., USA Ultimate memberships, and memberships and gift certificates from the PDGA.

The hybrid event and the partnership between USAU and PDGA were enthusiastically received by the community when they were announced earlier this fall. The Derby ended up consisting of five events. However, there were several more events planned that had to be canceled due to health and safety restrictions, and dozens of other inquiries about hosting similar events in the future. USAU and the PDGA will evaluate this first set of pilot events together and are expressing excitement about putting this experience towards building on the partnership and providing future crossover opportunities for ultimate players and disc golfers alike. Look for more information in 2021 and email discgolf@usaultimate.org if you have questions or comments about the program.
