The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) began organizing the World Beach Ultimate Championships (WBUC) in 2011, now hosting it every four years. A relatively newer discipline of the sport, beach ultimate features smaller teams (5 vs. 5) playing on smaller fields. While the environment might suggest a more laid back vibe, the focus and intensity displayed by participating athletes competing for world titles is anything but. Beginning with the 2023 edition, USA Ultimate will host tryouts for the event’s three elite divisions (men’s, mixed and women’s) while fielding additional, age-restricted teams in a variety of masters categories. Since WFDF began hosting WBUC, Team USA’s success on the grass has carried over onto the sand. All three elite divisions enter the next edition as defending world champions and have combined for nine medals in the last three tournaments – seven gold, one silver and one bronze.
