USA ULTIMATE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTS OFFICERS

Colorado Springs, Colo. (February 23, 2021)—The USA Ultimate Board of Directors elected five officers Saturday at its annual winter meeting – a daylong virtual gathering via Zoom that also included agenda items like governance training and best practices; team building exercises; financial and operational updates from headquarters staff; a discussion on returning to play in today’s COVID-19 environment; an update from WFDF president Nob Rauch; committee assignments and more.

After recently being reelected to the board as an elite athlete representative, incumbent Robyn Fennig was reelected president. Fennig will continue her role as president until the next election in the winter of 2023.

“I’m excited to continue to serve USA Ultimate,” said Fennig. “The board will be overseeing some really big initiatives in the next few years – including a strategic plan update. “Having been on the board for three years, serving as president for two of those, and more than 14 years in the sport as a volunteer, organizer, coach and player, gives me a lot of experience from which to draw.”

Independent member Leslie Gamez, who is currently serving her first term, was elected Vice President. With more than 35 years of senior leadership experience in the world of Olympic sports, including roles with the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, U.S Figure Skating and the International Olympic Committee, Gamez brings to her leadership position a significant background in sports and extensive experience living and working in multicultural and multilingual environments.

Entering his sixth year serving on the board as a two-time appointee, Ultimate Hall-of-Famer Steve Mooney was reelected treasurer.

Newly elected to an at-large seat, Ernest Toney was elected board secretary while elite athlete rep and incumbent secretary Charlie Mercer will serve as assistant secretary.

“Our officers are incredible this year,” continued Fennig. “I don’t know of any other opportunity where I could work closely with a world leader in sport like Leslie, a Hall-of-Famer like Steve and one of my all-time favorite staff members in Ernest.

“Our board focused a lot on governance training this meeting and honed in on our role in the sport. Our board is trying its best to bounce back from 2020, inviting our members back and showing new folks what ultimate has to offer. Like how can we really enhance our EDI work in our return to play efforts? It really starts with setting strategic-level goals – within our board, committees and our strategic plan – and supporting the staff to carry it out.”
